Abstract
Gideon Toury, as one of the prominent theorists in the fields of linguistics and translation, challenged the source-oriented approach to translation and proposed a target-oriented model encompassing three types of norms: initial, preliminary, and operational. This model marked a significant step toward the standardization of translation. The present study aims to utilize this model, employing a descriptive-analytical method and referencing library resources, to review and critique the Persian translation of Naguib Mahfouz's novel "Zuqaq al-Midaq," translated by Mohammad Reza Marashi-Pour. The findings of this study reveal that, in terms of the initial norm, the translator prioritizes the linguistic norms of the target language, ensuring that the translated text functions effectively and is well-received within the cultural and linguistic context of the target audience. Regarding operational norms, the translator adheres to structural norms, such as the addition or omission of words, phrases, and footnotes, while also incorporating linguistic norms, including equivalence-finding and stylistic features. Overall, the translator has succeeded in delivering a fluent and coherent rendition of the content.
