Ellipsis, as a literary device, refers to the omission or reduction of words in a text without distorting its meaning. This technique aims to achieve brevity, avoid redundancy, and maintain textual cohesion. Using a descriptive-analytical approach, this study examines ellipsis mechanisms in three categories—nominal, verbal, and clausal—in the Arabic novel al-ʿAṭr al-Faransī by Amir Taj al-Sir and its Persian translation by Mohammad Hezbaeizadeh. The data consist of 142 instances of ellipsis, analyzed through structural sentence analysis and categorized according to Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) and Persian Grammar by Anvari and Givi (1997). theoretical framework. The results indicate that employing the omission technique contributes to the fluency, conciseness, reduction of redundancy, and comprehensibility of the translated text. The findings reveal that in the selected novel, nominal omission is the most frequently used strategy, while verbal omission occurs with the least frequency. The translator, when dealing with omission mechanisms, occasionally strikes a relative balance between fidelity to the source text and fluency in the target language across certain components. By relying on contextual cues and omitting repetitive sections, the translator enhances the fluidity of the translation. However, in some instances, the translator refrains from omitting redundant contextual cues, resulting in verbosity in the text.
